Chantico the Volcano God

Chantico Volcano God

Chantico is, in Aztec mythology, the god of the hearth fire and of volcanoes. She takes the form of a red serpent, the serpent representing the snaking rivers of lava, and has a spikey crown. Her symbols are fire, metals and minerals, all things associated with volcanoes that not only spew out fire but also precious metals and gems, as well as mineral ash deposits. She became the guardian of lapidaries and metal smiths, this corresponding to other volcano gods who were said to hammer away in their giant furnaces (Hephaestus) or live atop a blazing furnace (see Yahweh).
