Masaya the volcano god
Masaya was a Nicaraguan volcano goddess who resided in the 'underworld' of the volcano. She was worshipped by the Chorotega people. The name 'Masaya' means burning mountain. She is depicted as a hideous old woman with droopy breasts, black skin and white wispy hair, the latter anthropomorphised smoke rising from the volcano. She demanded the sacrifice of people in exchange for divination.
