Hephaestus the volcano god
Hephaestus, known as Vulcan in Roman mythology, was a volcano god of the Greek pantheon. He was the god of fire and the forge and used a volcano as his forge where he was said to work as a blacksmith, which was a common and cross-cultural metaphor for the banging sounds made inside the volcano. He was associated with Mount Etna the volcano in Italy.
In Roman mythology, centuries ago, people thought that the hot lava fragments and clouds of dust erupting from Vulcano in Italy came from Vulcan's forge as he beat out thunderbolts for Jupiter, king of the gods, and weapons for Mars, the god of war.
